Based on photographic originals, the distinctive details of a face were to be captured and internalized on the basis of an initially classical portrait study, in order to serve as clues for free experimentation with different illustration techniques.  The aim was to ensure that the complexity of the photographic original would give way to an artistic interpretation without losing the striking character of the original head.
