When illustrating portraits, different materials/techniques should be used for several variations of the portrait in addition to the live work. In addition, detailed studies of, noses, mouths, eyes, ears were made. This involved the recognition of the specific character traits/attributes of the portrayed person and the conscious creation of light/shadow areas through hatching, shading etc. as well as the entire composition of the illustration.
